Carving Care Instructions
Ideal Placement for Your Carving
To ensure your carving remains in excellent condition, the most ideal location to position a new chainsaw carving is outdoors with plenty of air circulation and out of direct sunlight. The most compromising condition to a carving is direct sunlight and unstable humidity.
Outdoor Carvings
Outdoor carvings face the elements and require regular maintenance to preserve their beauty.
- Apply weather-resistant sealant annually (preferably in spring)
- Check for cracks or splits and fill with wood filler or paintable caulk as needed
- Position to allow water drainage and prevent pooling
- Do not place directly on ground. Use a stand, bricks, or patio pavers to create an air gap underneath
- Consider placing under a covered area for extended life
- Inspect regularly for signs of insect damage or rot
- Reapply finish when water no longer beads on the surface
Indoor Carvings
Indoor chainsaw carvings require minimal maintenance and can last for generations with proper care.
- Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and cracking
- Maintain consistent indoor temperature and humidity levels
- Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth
- Avoid placing near heat sources like radiators or fireplaces
- Apply furniture polish or polyurethane finish annually to maintain luster. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Cleaning Recommendations
- Use a soft brush to remove dirt and debris from crevices
- Clean with mild soap and water for stubborn stains
- Allow to dry completely before reapplying sealant
- Never use harsh chemicals or pressure washers
Weather Protection
Protecting your outdoor carving from extreme weather will significantly extend its lifespan.
- Apply extra coats of sealant before winter months
- Consider covering during harsh winter weather
- Ensure proper drainage to prevent water accumulation
- Elevate carvings off ground contact when possible
Ongoing Maintenance Schedule
Annually
Annually or whenever water stops beading on the surface
As Needed
Repair cracks, treat for insects (Diatomaceous Earth is a safe and effective insecticide), touch up damaged areas
Why Do Chainsaw Carvings Crack?
First, it's important to understand that cracking in wood is a natural and inevitable process, and a
little bit of character cracking is completely normal. The primary culprit is moisture fluctuation.
-
The biggest triggers are:
- Rapid drying: Moving a piece from a damp, outdoor environment to a dry, climate-controlled indoor space(like next to a woodstove).
- Direct sunlight: Placing a carving where it gets hit by intense, direct sun for extended periods
- Extreme temperature changes: Exposing the wood to large temperature swings
